Taxonomy for Dogs
The English word dog refers to the domestic pet dog, Canis lupus familiaris. In
the year 1993, Smithsonian Institution and the American Society of Mammalogists
classified dogs classified as sub-species of the gray wolf, Canis lupus.
Dogs have been the most extensively kept companion animals in human history. In
the world, there are over 400 million dogs of which have developed into over 800
dog breeds recognized by various kennel clubs. Dog’s height ranges from few inches
in the Chihuahua breed to a few feet as in Irish Wolfhound breed. The color of the
dogs also varies from white through grays to black, and browns from light (tan)
to dark ("red" or "chocolate") in a broad variation of pattern; and coats can vary
from coarse hair to something akin to wool, straight or curly, or smooth and could
be very short to many centimeters long, from. It is very common for most breeds
to shed this coat; however some non-shedding breeds are also popular. Mixed-breed
dogs are dogs that do not belong explicitly to one breed, being mixtures of more
than two in variant percentages. Mixed breed dogs and purebred dogs are both suitable
as companions or competitors in dog sports. Sometimes different breed dogs are deliberately
bred so as to inherit best features of both breeds such as the Cockapoo, a mixture
of Cocker Spaniel and Miniature Poodle.
Popular Breeds of Dogs
Breed popularity varies from place and location counting by American Kennel Club
(AKC) registration or by United Kennel Club (UKC) registration. Labrador Retriever
has been the US most registered breed of dog ever since 1991. In 2005 in New York
city, the most registered breed was the Poodle and in Houston, Yorkshire Terrier
was the most registered breed. The commonly available dog for adoption is the American
Pit Bull Terrier or pit bull-type mixes as reported by Animal shelter of America.
In 1983, the AKC's top two registered breeds were the American Cocker Spaniel and
the Poodle. In the United Kingdom, Kennel Club has reported Labrador Retriever as
the most-registered breed over the period of 1999 to 2005. Other two popular breed
of UK is the German Shepherd Dog and English Cocker Spaniel. In the UK, Greyhound
and Staffordshire Bull Terrier breeds are the most common breed for dog adoption
according to UK Animal shelters.
